Puha and Grapefruit Salad – Food from the Backyard

Puha is a name most New Zealanders will be very familiar with, if you don’t live here it will probably mean nothing to you at all. Puha is the Maori name for Sow Thistle which grows in most countries in some variety. I noticed a few young plants around the fence line while mowing the lawn yesterday and figured it was time to use the stuff I have available freely to me. Something else I have in the back yard, in over abundance, is Grapefruit, this salad only took the tally down by one but it is a start.

Just some segmented grapefruit tossed with puha and crushed macadamia nuts in a dressing made from grapefruit juice, palm sugar, olive oil and seasoning. The grapefruit and palm sugar actually worked very well together the bitterness dampened by the mellow sweetness of the palm.

Honestly I do prefer the cooked taste more than the fresh, I think it is a little herby by its self. Never tried it in a stirfry though, what did you use it with?

  3. What a great idea, I think its wonderful you are utilizing what you already have on hand!
